Digital vs. Physical Vignette: What's the Difference?

Switzerland requires an annual vignette for vehicles using national motorways. Choosing the right type depends on your travel habits and preference. Both are valid from December 1st of the previous year until January 31st of the following year.

Digital Vignette

The digital vignette is a modern, convenient alternative to the traditional sticker. It is electronically linked to your vehicle's license plate number, meaning there's no physical sticker to apply to your windshield or remove later. This is an excellent option if you frequently change vehicles (e.g., driving different rental cars) or if you prefer a paperless solution. Purchase and validation are often instant, allowing you to be ready to travel through Switzerland immediately after buying online.

Physical Vignette

The traditional physical vignette is a sticker that must be correctly affixed to the inside of your vehicle's windshield. Each sticker is valid for one specific vehicle for the defined period. This is the classic method used for decades and remains a reliable choice for those who prefer a tangible permit. Remember to remove the old vignette when replacing it. We handle the purchase process and arrange for the sticker to be shipped directly to your nominated address.

What Our Customers Say

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, an annual motorway vignette is legally required for all motor vehicles and trailers weighing up to 3.5 tonnes that intend to use Swiss national motorways (referred to as Autobahnen and Autostrassen). Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes (excluding passenger cars and light motorhomes) are subject to a heavy vehicle charge based on distance. Driving on designated toll motorways without a valid, properly affixed physical vignette or a validated digital vignette can result in significant fines.

The primary difference lies in their form and how they are linked to your vehicle. A physical vignette is a tangible sticker that must be correctly affixed to the windshield of a single vehicle. It cannot be transferred. A digital vignette, conversely, is electronic and linked directly to your vehicle's license plate number. There is no physical sticker required. This offers flexibility, particularly if you use multiple vehicles registered to the same license plate (if regulations allow) or rent cars frequently (though validity needs checking).

The annual Swiss motorway vignette is valid for a period of 14 months. Its validity begins on December 1st of the year preceding the one printed on the vignette and extends until January 31st of the year following the one printed. For example, a vignette for 2024 is valid from December 1, 2023, until January 31, 2025. There are currently no shorter-term options available; only the annual vignette exists.

Physical vignettes are strictly non-transferable. Once affixed to a windshield, they are valid only for that specific vehicle and become invalid if removed. Digital vignettes are linked to the license plate, offering some flexibility. However, they can generally only be transferred in specific, limited circumstances, such as if the license plate itself is transferred to a new vehicle due to vehicle replacement (proof is usually required). It is not permitted to simply use a digital vignette on different vehicles using different license plates.

One of the major advantages of the digital vignette is speed. After a successful online purchase through our platform, the validation process is typically very fast. In most cases, your digital vignette is linked to your license plate and becomes officially valid for immediate use on Swiss motorways within just a few minutes. This makes it ideal for last-minute purchases before entering Switzerland.

We strive to process and dispatch orders for physical vignettes as quickly as possible. However, actual shipping times will depend on the destination country and local postal services. Within Switzerland, delivery is usually within 1-2 business days. International shipping times can vary significantly, from a few days to over a week or more, depending on distance and customs procedures. We recommend ordering your physical vignette well in advance of your planned travel date to ensure it arrives in time.
